For the discerning car lover, one of the greatest pleasures imaginable can be driving a convertible. After all, convertibles offer an experience unlike any other, especially when one drives with the top down. In California, a scenic drive along the Orange County coast becomes irresistible when the convertible top is down allowing the cool breeze to soothe the driver and passengers alike, while the sun warms their faces. There is a substantial feeling of being more open and connected to sights and surroundings, because when the top is down, there is no sense of being enclosed.
Convertibles require special care in order to look and perform their best, and that includes careful protection and maintenance of the convertible top. Harsh weather conditions such as rain, hail, snow, extreme heat as well as natural occurrences like bird droppings can all compromise the structure and appearance of the convertible’s fabric or vinyl top over time. Structural damage can include fading, discoloration, rips, tears and possibly even leaks that put the entire interior of the vehicle at risk for damage. Fortunately there are measures that can be taken to prevent this destruction:
- Fabric tops are not waterproof therefore they need to be sprayed with a special waterproofing protectant in order to shield them from water damage and prevent them from leaking.
- Cleaning solutions that include bleach, ammonia, vinegar, alcohol, detergents and acids should never be used on a convertible top. These substances can erode the material or leave it dried out, clouded or discolored. Cleaning agents designed especially for convertible tops should only be used.
- Convertible tops should regularly be rinsed with water to prevent buildup of dust, leaves as well as other everyday items.
- A special cleaning product suitable for use on convertible tops should be used to thoroughly clean the convertible top every 6 to 8 weeks for fabric tops, or every 4 to 5 weeks for vinyl tops. The instructions on the bottle should be followed, using a soft bristle brush instead of a rag or sponge. To avoid partial discoloration, the entire top should always be cleaned.
- After cleaning, a microfiber towel should be used to dry the convertible top thoroughly.
- A special soft top protectant should be applied after cleaning, following the directions on the bottle. If more than one coat is to be used, the protective agent should be allowed to dry completely between coats.
- If possible, a convertible should be parked inside a covered garage instead of outside where it is more vulnerable to weather and the elements.
The average life of a convertible top is about ten years, depending on its type, usage and exposure to the elements. Vinyl tops lose flexibility with age, even more so when exposed to cold temperatures. As a vinyl top ages, it develops cracks at the key folding points. Older vinyl tops are especially vulnerable to cracking when put down in cold weather. A vinyl top should never be put down in temperatures below 40 degrees. Fabric tops tend to look newer for longer because they age more internally than externally. Fabric tops are less vulnerable to cold temperatures; however they still should never be put down in temperatures below 40 degrees.
